The #1 Mistake Achievers Make (and how to flip it)

Ever felt like your soul was lagging behind your schedule?

I want to speak to that today — not as a critic, but as a fellow builder. Because I’ve made this mistake more times than I care to admit.
The Mistake? Building from the Outside In
As leaders, we’re conditioned to react to what’s around us:

The needs are urgent.

The metrics are visible.
-
The people are watching.
So we push. We perform. We produce.
And if we’re not careful, we start looking to the world to define what matters most.
We let the pressure set the priorities. We let the culture shape our calendar. We let the noise tell us who we are.
This is the #1 mistake achievers make: Looking out before looking up.
Reverse the Flow
Here’s the antidote: Start with God.
Before you pick up your phone…
Before you outline your next big launch…
Before you craft a new message or strategy…
You start with presence.
You sit with your Creator — not as a Leader, but as a son or daughter.
You ask:

“Who do You say I am?”
-
“What matters most today?”
-
“Where are You already at work — and how can I join You?”
This is how you flip the flow:
Instead of letting your identity flow from activity,
You let your activity flow from intimacy.
Jesus modeled this perfectly.
Before He ever walked on water or turned water to wine, He walked with His Father.
He said, “I only do what I see the Father doing” (John 5:19).
That’s inside-out leadership.
Why This Matters for Mission-Driven Leaders
If you’re leading a movement that’s supposed to last…
If you’re building something eternal, not just impressive…
You can’t afford to run on fumes. You need fuel from the Source. Not recycled inspiration — revelation. You don’t need to hustle harder. You need to anchor deeper.
Because when your identity is set, your strategy gets sharper. When your values are rooted, your voice grows stronger. When your soul is full, your leadership becomes sustainable.
Don’t Let the World Set the Pace
This week, I want to challenge you: Start with God.
→ Let Him define your identity.
→ Let Him speak into your priorities.
→ Let Him send you into your work, rather than you dragging Him into it.
Kingdom work is not about pace. It’s about presence.
You’re a thermostat, not a thermometer. You’re here to set the tone — not just react to it.
