The Four Areas That Make or Break a Pastor's Health

The four areas that make or break a pastor's health: your own tank, vision clarity, team strength, and how much depends on you

Have you ever looked at your week and wondered, “How am I working this hard and still feeling this stuck?”

You’re preparing messages. Caring for people. Answering questions. Making decisions. And before you’ve had a chance to catch your breath, Sunday is coming again.

Most of the pastors I talk with don’t need someone to tell them to work harder. They’re already giving everything they have.

What’s harder to see is where all that energy is going—and what keeps draining it.

After nearly two decades leading the same church, I’ve come to pay attention to four areas that shape a pastor’s health. They’re connected. When one gets neglected, you start feeling it in the others.

And when you’re in the middle of it, it can be hard to know where to start.

1. Your Own Tank

How are you doing? Really?

Your walk with God. Your rest. Your body. Your marriage and the people closest to you.

It’s easy to give those things whatever is left after ministry gets its share. The problem is, some weeks there’s nothing left.

You can spend your whole week helping other people walk with God and barely slow down enough to enjoy Him yourself.

Your health deserves a place on the calendar, too.

What keeps getting pushed aside because somebody else needs something?

2. The Clarity of Your Vision

When you’re unclear about where you’re leading, every opportunity needs a meeting. Every request feels urgent. Every decision takes more energy than it should.

You can fill a calendar that way. But it gets harder to explain what all that activity is accomplishing.

Clarity helps you decide what deserves your attention this season—and what you can release.

Can you name what matters most in your ministry right now? Could your team?

3. The Strength of Your Team

You were never meant to carry the ministry alone.

But having people around you doesn’t automatically mean the responsibility is shared. You can have a room full of willing people and still be the one doing all the thinking, deciding, and following up.

A healthy team grows as people learn to own the mission, make decisions, and develop others.

That takes time. It also takes a willingness to trust people with something that matters.

Who is growing in responsibility because of the way you’re leading?

4. How Much Depends on You

If you stepped away for a month, what would keep going? What would stop?

Think about the decisions, the Sunday details, the follow-up, the things only you know how to do.

Your answer can show you where the ministry needs clearer systems, better handoffs, or another person equipped to lead.

Every responsibility that depends entirely on you is something you can’t fully put down—even on your day off.

What still requires your involvement that someone else could be equipped to own?

Where Do You Start?

You may have read those four areas and thought, “ I need help with all of them.”

That can feel overwhelming. And strengthening them takes real work.

But you don’t have to tackle everything this week. You can begin by getting clear about which area needs your attention first.

That’s why I created the free Healthy Pastor Scorecard.

In about two minutes, it walks you through these four areas and helps you identify where to focus next.

If an area scores lower than you hoped, take a breath. That score isn’t a verdict on your calling or your worth. It’s a place to begin.

Look at what it shows you. Then choose one practical step you can take this week.
