The Secret Weapon of Spiritual Leaders (Especially This Week)
Mar 30, 2026
It’s Easter week.
And if you’re anything like me, you’re coming off a busy weekend.
Four services.
A board meeting.
A worship night.
A vision tour.
And now… you’re staring down the biggest weekend of the year.
For us? Seven Easter services. The most we’ve ever done.
Let’s be honest—this isn’t a normal week.
This is pressure week.
Expectation week.
Opportunity week.
And most leaders respond the same way:
Push harder. Add more. Squeeze tighter.
That’s exactly how you burn out before the moment that matters most.
⸻
The Advice That Changed My Week
A pastor friend told me something a while back that I almost ignored.
“Clear your personal calendar the week before Easter.”
Not tweak it.
Not optimize it.
Clear it.
So this year, I actually did it.
• Monday: completely off
• Tuesday: meeting day
• Wednesday–Friday: wide open
No meetings.
No clutter.
No unnecessary noise.
And honestly?
I can’t remember the last time my calendar looked like that.
⸻
Here’s What Hit Me
As I looked at those open days, something clicked:
The secret weapon of spiritual leaders isn’t productivity.
It’s not better systems.
It’s not better tools.
It’s not platform, influence, or notoriety.
It’s margin.
But not just margin…
Margin used well.
⸻
Why This Matters More Than You Think
Most leaders walk into Easter:
• Spiritually drained
• Mentally scattered
• Emotionally thin
And then we wonder why the moment doesn’t carry the weight it should.
You don’t need more hustle this week.
You need more space.
Because margin is what allows you to:
• Hear clearly instead of react quickly
• Lead spiritually instead of just operationally
• Show up present instead of depleted
⸻
What I’m Doing With My Margin
I’m not filling those days with “catch-up work.”
I’m guarding them.
Using them for what actually fuels the moment:
• Prayer walks (and drives)
• Deep study—not rushed prep
• Time with my family
• Reflection
• Real rest
• Intentional planning
In other words:
I’m preparing my soul, not just my sermon.
⸻
Your Move
Let me challenge you the way my friend challenged me:
What would it look like to clear your calendar this week?
Not perfectly.
Not completely.
But aggressively.
What can you cancel?
What can you postpone?
What can you delegate?
What simply doesn’t matter right now?
Because here’s the truth you need to hear:
You don’t rise to the occasion this weekend.
You fall to the level of your preparation.
And the deepest preparation isn’t activity.
It’s margin.
⸻
Don’t Waste This Week
Easter isn’t just another event.
It’s a moment.
And moments like this deserve more than a busy leader running on fumes.
They deserve a leader who is:
• Clear
• Filled
• Focused
• Ready
So don’t just push harder this week.
Step back.
Clear space.
Use it well.
That might be the most spiritual thing you do all year.
