The Fastest Way to Unlock Your Possibilities
If you look at the leaders you admire most—the ones who make you feel seen, heard, and valued—you’ll notice something they all share:
They are fully present.
They’re not rushing ahead to the next task.
They’re not replaying yesterday’s conversation.
They’re here—in the moment, in the room, in the relationship.
And presence isn’t just a personality trait.
It’s a practice.
Why Presence Matters More Than We Think
Presence multiplies everything else.
You can be productive, driven, and disciplined—but without presence, your leadership loses its power. You get things done, but you miss moments. You move fast, but you fail to connect deeply.
When I think about presence, I think about Jesus.
Not just as a historical figure, but as a present force.
Jesus didn’t rush past people. He noticed interruptions. He engaged fully. He modeled what it looks like to be entirely present with God and with others.
That’s something I’ve had to learn the hard way.
I’m wired for achievement. I care deeply about stewardship—using well what God has given me. But that same drive can pull me into performance mode, where I’m always thinking about the next mountain instead of the moment I’m standing on.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
The good news? Presence can be learned.
Here are three practices that have helped me—and that can help you—grow in presence.
1. Cultivate Awareness and Intention
Presence starts with awareness.
A simple question can change everything:
What am I sensing right now?
What do you feel physically? Emotionally? Spiritually?
Are you tired? Anxious? Excited? Distracted? Carrying a conversation from yesterday into today?
Awareness helps you identify what’s pulling you out of the moment.
Once you’re aware, you can set intention:
“I’m choosing to be here right now.”
You don’t need to solve everything in the moment—you just need to name it, park it, and return your attention to what’s in front of you.
2. Release Tension and Set Intention in Transitions
Most of us lose presence in transitions.
We carry the weight of one meeting into the next. One conversation bleeds into another. By the end of the day, we’re exhausted—not because the day was hard, but because we never released anything.
Presence requires space.
Even a few minutes between activities can help you:
-
Release tension
-
Acknowledge what just happened
-
Set a clear intention for what’s next
Ask:
-
How did that go?
-
What am I carrying that I need to release?
-
What do I want this next moment to feel like?
Presence requires focus—and focus is a decision.
3. Embrace Joy and Gratitude
Presence isn’t passive. You bring something to the moment.
Think about a potluck—people are more likely to show up when they’re bringing something. The same is true relationally.
Decide ahead of time:
-
What am I bringing to this interaction?
Joy.
Attention.
Gratitude.
One of the most powerful shifts you can make is this:
Don’t stack tension—stack gratitude.
Carry thankfulness with you throughout the day. Thank God for what He’s already doing. Gratitude lightens your spirit, softens your posture, and draws people in.
Presence grows when joy and gratitude lead the way.
Two Questions Worth Asking
As you reflect, ask yourself:
-
What usually keeps me from being present?
(Tasks? Lists? Yesterday’s conversations? Tomorrow’s worries?)
-
When was a time I was fully present—and it mattered?
What did you do to prepare for that moment? How could you do it again?
Some of the most meaningful moments of my life—my wedding day, the birth of my children—were powerful because I was nowhere else. I was fully there.
Here’s the truth we often miss:
We don’t always know which moments will matter most ahead of time.
Which means presence is how we stay ready.
The Invitation
If you and I grow in presence, almost everything else improves:
-
Our leadership
-
Our relationships
-
Our joy
-
Our impact
Presence is one of the greatest gifts we can give—to God, to others, and to ourselves.
I’m committing to making presence a priority.
I won’t be perfect—but I’ll keep practicing.
Let’s show up fully for what God has placed in front of us.
Because the moment you’re in might be more important than you realize.
